I start out with the most basic outline of a few sentences written for a beginning, a middle, and a possible end. Then I fill in what has to happen in the beginning to get to the middle; in the middle to get to the end; and what has to happen to wrap up the story in the end. The outline changes as I write, but when I begin revision I create a chapter-by-chapter outline making sure I hit all of the major points of each chapter.Rita Kuehnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02226833593333025875noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1110107012766586348.post-22148769695266291432012-09-11T11:08:27.991-07:002012-09-11T11:08:27.991-07:00I do a basic outline at a high level, with all the...I do a basic outline at a high level, with all the major plot points I want to hit, but usually never a chapter-by-chapter outline. I always come up with good ideas while writing so I have trouble sticking with an outline. Sometimes they are dead ends (that's what delete buttons are for) but if I'm lucky they take the story somewhere truly wonderful.JOhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03127111575563904349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1110107012766586348.post-30708979361139226892012-09-11T10:47:03.058-07:002012-09-11T10:47:03.058-07:00I love chapter outlines. I've never had a book that I outlined completely change, but one of the ones I didn't outline got completely rewritten 3 times. I don't have the time or patience to write books over and over. I like to do the first draft and then improve and polish that - maybe over and over, but at least the story is there. My book is framed in terms of a general outline, but the subject is so complicated that writing freely on this one works best for me. I know that there will be a lot of re-structuring when the book is complete. I may try to do a chapter outline and compare it to what I wrote without one and see what it looks like. Great ideas -- and thank you for the insightful post!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03556243571224973844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1110107012766586348.post-38929517400286877172012-09-11T05:38:24.109-07:002012-09-11T05:38:24.109-07:00yes they are beneficial, especially for me since I...yes they are beneficial, especially for me since I am writing a series and I have to keep track of what happens in each book, even the smallest thing can make your book inconsistent. The only thing is I never stick to the outline, but that's okay, it is a guide to keep you on the right path! Thanks for the post!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10481344598298150867noreply@blogger.com
